For many Australians, slipping on a pair of thongs is something they never have to think twice about.
But for Adrian, it was something he thought he'd never do again.
After losing all the toes on his right foot except his big toe, Adrian assumed wearing thongs comfortably was no longer possible. Like many people living with limb loss or missing toes, he tried expensive footwear, orthotics and well-known brands, hoping something would work.
Nothing did.
Every pair slipped off, moved around on his foot or simply wouldn't stay on.
Then he discovered Slappas.
"I'd tried everything."
When Adrian contacted us, he shared something that really stayed with us.
"I'd tried everything. Slappas are the only thongs I can wear."
Not only could he wear them, but they stayed securely on his foot, allowing him to enjoy the freedom of wearing thongs again.
When we shared Adrian's story on social media, it reached more than 21,000 people. The response was overwhelming, with many people tagging family members and friends who also struggle to wear traditional thongs.
It reminded us that there are likely many Australians who have simply accepted that thongs are no longer an option, when there may be another alternative.
Why do Slappas work?
Every foot is different, and we can never guarantee Slappas will suit everyone.
However, there are several design features that made a real difference for Adrian:
- Raised edge – helps keep the foot securely positioned.
- Firm straps – provide stability without feeling loose.
- Premium EVA footbed – gradually moulds to your feet over time for a more personalised fit.
- Heel cup – helps keep the heel in place and reduces movement inside the thong.
Together, these features helped Adrian wear thongs again with confidence.
Bernie's story
Adrian isn't the only one.
Our son Bernie lost his leg above the knee in an accident in 2021 and now wears a prosthetic leg.
For Bernie, Slappas have become his footwear of choice whenever he's camping, walking through creeks or spending time outdoors.
He used to wear Crocs, but they would fill with water, causing his prosthetic foot to move around inside the shoe and making it much harder to keep his balance.
With Slappas, he says he feels much more confident.
Because they stay securely on his prosthetic foot, he can walk through water with less chance of slipping or losing his balance, allowing him to enjoy camping and exploring with greater confidence.
